Comparing Transit Systems

By admin, March 31, 2011 10:24 pm

This is a wonderfully elegant example comparing transit systems of the world with exactly the same scale.

I always thought the Toronto Transit system was a little “thin” compared to other cities of comparable size… this graphic by artist Niel Freeman shows very clearly by just how much.

And you thought Sushi was complicated ? :)

Sushi is really straightforward, dosage so why do some restaurants make it so generic and complicated? I really like the way (as described in this article) they take the simple approach at this Sushi Restaurant

Eric Berlow: How complexity leads to simplicity

The website TED is loaded with these gems. This is an good example of taking a hugely complex diagram and trying to boil it down to the 2 key points. The world really does not have to be so complicated. It really is just a matter of sorting through all the “noise” and figuring out what is important.

Fuel Surcharge on Steroids

I’m not 100% happy with the clarity of this this global inflation chart (perhaps more definition as to the granularity of the red parts), but it's unique enough to archive here.

The concept of "fuel surcharges" on airline tickets (or anything for that matter) has always disturbed me. Nobody ever seems to dive into this in any more detail. However, cheap in my post in this thread on Airliners.net , viagra buy a few simple calculations reduce this seemingly complex subject down to a bunch of baloney. Others in the thread are in complete agreement with me.

Fuel Capacity of A319 - 6303 usg
Range of A319 - 2760 miles
YVR - MEX - 2454 miles

For arguments sake... this trip takes a full load of gas...

6300 * $2.68 gallon for Jet-A is $16,884 for a full tank of fuel

This configuration of A319 seats 120 pax.

120 * $105 fuel surcharge = $12,500.

This is NOT a surcharge. The passengers are paying 75% of the entire cost of the fuel. This only makes sense if AC is operating under the assumption oil will forever be priced at $25/barrel.

Tsunami made simple

There must be hundreds of ways to present weather data. Click This is an interesting take on “extreme” temperature variations in the US. I especially like the colour coding effect.

From this page in Wikipedia, pills I like the simplicity of both using an animated .gif and how it gets the message across..
